Booming Breadfast

Not so long ago, Cairo residents got introduced to a simple bakery app with the creative name "Breadfast". The team proved themselves and succeeded to reach out to thousands of users who became loyal customers in a -relatively- short period of time. Along the way, the company (represented in the app), launched lots of new services thus features.
And since I have been one of their first users, I would like to begin my blog posts with something to write about Breadfast.
I don't want to start boring, so I'll just pick few points to write down about Breadfast pros and cons, from a user perspective.

Five things I like:
  • Neat design
The key is always simplicity. This app (especially when it first few versions) is a living proof. The plain white background, the not so crowded -yet creative- logo, the limited color palette, the sans-serif fonts are among the factors that make the experience so easy and eye-comforting.
  • Free delivery option
When I first tried the app, I was impressed with the fact that I can order some bread for breakfast and pay nothing for delivery. Yes, this was only applicable during a specific time interval, but still, as a first time user, this encouraged me big time to try out the app and the provided service.
  • Smooth user flow
It takes a user very few and clear steps to complete an order, nothing complicated! I can literally place my order in less than 60 seconds.

Smooth user flow

  • Labelled products
Each and every product is named properly. The name being indicative and accurate is a huge deal by the way. It is sometimes a way of educating users about your products and their variety. I myself got introduced to a couple of new types of bread and pies through the app.
  • Gift orders
The cute little things always matter, especially when you know that most of your users are going to be females. The app enables you to send a fresh morning gift to a relative or a friend while you pay from your side.

Five things I dislike:
  • Confusing icons
I caught myself reading the labels most of the time not looking at the icons. This means the icons are really confusing and tend to be useless. Using this pastel warm color palette as a background for each and every product photo is not the best choice at this stage of the app, from my point of view.

Confusing icons

  • No search functionality
Although they have added lots of new categories (like dairy, drinks and groceries), but they haven't yet added a search functionality to the app. Sometimes I just need to look for a certain product very quickly without going through its category then sub-category and so on.
  • Too many categories
Let's assume I have no UX background whatsoever and I just opened the app for the first time, I'll definitely wonder what is this app selling! There too many unrelated categories and the worse is too many sub-categories too. Not only that, if I click on a certain category, it displays the products of the first sub-category inside this category, so it obligates me to search for the sub-category I want then make another click. Confused, ha? Consider how is it like for a middle-aged lady!
  • Top-up?
There is something inside "Account" list called "Top-up" that is completely vague and unclear. I am a loyal customer to this app and I have ordered not less than 50 times before and I don't really understand what is Top-up!

Top-up?

  • Repetitive "Add to Cart" buttons
Why not just press on the product to add it to the cart? Why display tens of "ADD TO CART" button in every page? It is even more intuitive to just click on the product to add it to the cart.

Overall, I'd give this app an 8.5 out of 10 score. Good job Breadfast team!

  1. Liked your review, great work.
My suggestion is to structure your review, you can split it into UX,User flow, UI (if you wish) etc.
another suggestion is to make a review for every aspect then accumulate the average rating at the end to be your final rating, that's will be more realistic and neutral I guess.

    Keep it up,Good luck.

  2. One of the missing important UX features is order tracking. They always show one message "Under Processing" while the user would always like to know what's going on with him order.

Another bad UX regarding their operations is the limited delivery slots which have been affected badly lately due to the high demand and the spread of the coronavirus leading to long delays in delivery.

Their customer service is chat-based and they aren't always available which is annoying.

I like the idea and it's an original one but they still need improvements.
